What is a branching scenario?

A branching scenario — or interactive case study — is an activity where the learner faces a situation, picks from several options and immediately sees the consequence of their choice, which drives the rest of the story. Unlike an MCQ that checks knowledge, a branching scenario assesses a decision in context.

It's the digital form of role-play: you learn by doing, risk-free. Each path can lead to a successful ending, a “needs work” ending or a neutral outcome — the learner grasps through experience what works and what doesn't.

Why use it in professional training

Branching scenarios shine where a quiz hits its limits: soft skills (customer relations, management, communication), compliance and safety, where you must practise a behaviour rather than recite a rule. Learners are engaged because their choices have visible consequences.
